Riflessioni

Description:
A large sinkhole that resembles something out of a Hollywood movie has closed a section of Bayview Avenue to traffic. It happened overnight on Thursday after a water main break. Bayview Avenue just north of Steeles Avenue is closed between Proctor Avenue and Laureleaf Road as crews work to fix the buckled pavement. In some sections, the crack is as wide as a traffic lane. CBC’s Lorenda Reddekopp was at the scene and said York Regional police officers were describing the nine-metre deep sinkhole as “something out of Jurassic Park.” “You just do not expect to see a huge crack down the middle of the road and then the road just buckled in at the middle,” Reddekopp reported. “Crews are starting to dig but this is not an easy problem to fix. It’s going to take days, maybe even weeks.” Police say people will need to find another route not just for today, but for the days ahead.

Earthquake - North-America - USA

Description:
A moderate earthquake early Saturday in central Oklahoma knocked pictures off walls and woke people and pets as it shook an area that stretched into Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri and Texas. The U.S. Geological Survey said on its website Saturday that a 4.7 magnitude earthquake struck at 2:12 a.m., with an epicenter about six miles north of Prague in Lincoln County. That’s about 50 miles east of Oklahoma City and 75 miles southwest of Tulsa. A 3.4 magnitude aftershock was reported at 2:27 a.m. from the same location, as well as a 2.7 magnitude aftershock at 2:44 a.m. “Oh, man. I’ve never felt anything like that in my life,” Prague City Police Department dispatcher Claudie Morton told the Tulsa World. “It was the scariest thing. I had a police officer just come in and sit down and all the sudden the walls started shaking and the windows were rattling. It felt like the roof was going to come off the police department.” Morton said the office was flooded with calls, but no one reported injuries or major damage. She said residents told her that picture frames and mirrors fell from walls and broke, drawers worked loose from dressers and objects tumbled out of cabinets.
“We do have several damaged buildings downtown, but it’s just cracks and things like that,” Morton said. “Nothing is destroyed or anything like that.” Oklahoma Geological Survey researcher Austin Holland told Oklahoma City television station KOTV that the earthquake and aftershocks occurred on a known fault line. Residents in Prague and Sparks felt an intense shaking, while farther away, the quake was more of a dull rumble, he said. “It shakes much more rapidly when you’re closer to it,” he said. “Because it’s a large earthquake, it’s going to rumble for a while.” Holland said his office received hundreds of emails from people who felt the quake. The messages came from as far as Texas, Missouri and Arkansas, he said. Tom Foster of Oklahoma City told The Oklahoman that he slept through the earthquake but was awakened by an aftershock. “I know we’ve already had several phone calls from out of state relatives wondering what happened,” Foster said. “I guess it’s more interesting than anything that was dangerous.” Heather Spicer of Sapulpa said the shaking woke her son and their dog. “At first I thought an airplane had crashed nearby,” she told The Oklahoman. “But now I believe it was an earthquake because the whole house just kept vibrating with what sounded like distant thunder outside.”

Description:
Friday night, a bizarre diesel spill on board a Bay Area school bus sends nearly a dozen high school students to the hospital. The students from Woodside High School on the peninsula were heading home from a field trip to Yuba River when the trouble began. The bus had to pull off Interstate 680 in Pleasant Hill. After the ordeal, most of the students headed home to the peninsula on a replacement bus. However, 11 students had to be sent to various hospitals in the East Bay because they needed to be treated for exposure to diesel fuel that flooded the floor of their school bus. The school bus with 38 11th grade Woodside High School students and chaperones was traveling along Highway 680 when diesel fuel began flooding the floor of the bus. The bus turned off on Contra Costa Boulevard, right across the street from the Pleasant Hill Shopping Center. That's where the driver called police as students were evacuated from the bus. "The driver recognized there was a fuel spill going on actually inside the school bus. The driver took the exit and pulled off here onto Contra Costa Boulevard and approximately 11 of the 35 kids were sent to local hospitals for treatment for the fumes," said CHP Sgt. Mike Humble. The students were returning from an environmental trip up the Yuba River. Some of the students complained of burns on their feet from walking barefoot in the diesel fuel that flooded the floor. Others complained of not being able to breath after inhaling the fumes. The remaining students were treated at the scene by firefighters and then escorted to another Sequoia Union District bus which headed back to the peninsula. The Sequoia Union High School District sent along a tow truck to pick up the bus and take it back to the yard to find out exactly why this leak occurred. Parents of the injured students at four area hospitals are on their way to those hospitals to be with their children.

Description:
More than 20 people, mostly band members, were hospitalized Friday night after suddenly falling ill during a high school football game in southwest Houston on Friday night. It was first believed they had been exposed to an unknown chemical, but fire officials said later they had found no trace of gases or chemical agents at the scene. Austin and Yates high schools were playing at Barnett Stadium when, sometime around 9:00pm local time, students suddenly fell ill and hazmat teams and emergency crews were dispatched to the stadium. The victims, mainly band members and dancers from Austin High, were reportedly suffering from nausea, vomiting and heart palpitations. David Almaguer, Houston Fire Department assistant chief, told KTRK-TV that the victims had been taken to several local hospitals. "A number of the students were complaining of nausea," he said. "We ended up with 22 students being transported to five different hospitals" A hazmat team was set up a decontamination unit in the vicinity of the stadium, which was evacuated following the incident. A student said he began to smell something odd when he saw his sister lose consciousness. Another witness said, "Three dancers moved to the side and started throwing up, then as we got to the stands, more started falling." A doctor who interviewed patients at the scene said investigators were still trying to work out what caused the students to suddenly become ill, after fire officials said their detection equipment had found no sign of gases or chemical agents in the area. "The kids all ate at different places, some of them ate at different times ... but they did have something in their stomachs. At this point, it remains a little unclear what set it off," Emergency Medical Services doctor David Purse said.

Description:
More than 200 people have died in monsoon flooding in Thailand since mid-July, officials say. More heavy rain is forecast, reservoirs are at full capacity and rivers are overflowing. Water has inundated 58 of Thailand's 77 provinces, with 25 still badly hit. Huge tracts of farmland are submerged, threatening this year's rice crop. Water is also lapping at the walls of Buddhist temples in the ancient capital of Ayutthaya, a World Heritage Site. Officials are struggling to drain water from one of the ancient city's best known temples, Wat Chaiwatthanaram, after a makeshift dyke on the Chao Phraya river was breached. The northern city of Chiang Mai, another popular tourist destination, has also been badly hit by floods. The capital Bangkok has so far been spared, but it is under threat as Tropical Storm Nalgae is expected to bring more in the next few days. Flooding has affected more than two million people. "The current flood situation is the worst that I have ever seen and it will last until the first week of November," said independent flood expert Royal Chitradon, the director of Thai Integrated Water Resource Management. The government says it will draft a plan to improve prevention measures and warning systems. But the BBC's Southeast Asia correspondent, Rachel Harvey, says the new administration is under pressure to get a grip on the current crisis before planning for the future.
